As we have said time and time again, surveillance video is a vital tool for businesses to defend themselves, or others, amid accusations from both employees and patrons. This recently became a substantial issue at the Olympic Games in Rio when American swimmer, Ryan Lochte, claimed that he and three other swimmers were robbed at gunpoint after the cab that they were riding in was pulled over by men posing as police officers. He later changed his account of the robbery to include that the swimmers stopped at a gas station in order to use the restroom, and the robbery had actually happened on their way back to the cab.

What Lochte failed to take into account, other than the fact that his comrades would inevitably give different versions of the story, is that there were video surveillance cameras installed at the gas station. As you can see in the video from Inside Edition below, there was no robbery at gunpoint.

Watch the video here.

Instead, it turns out that the four men had actually vandalized the gas station that they stopped at, including trying to knock down the bathroom door. While you do see footage of them being told by security guards to sit on the curb, it was to collect money from them in order to pay for the property that they damaged.

A valuable lesson for Lochte; there may be two sides to every story, but when there is video surveillance footage, the truth will always play out.

More information regarding Ryan Lochte and his charge for filing a false police report can be read here.
