In news from north of the border, CTV News Kitchner reports that smoke alarms are credited with potentially saving family of six after h ouse fire in Elmira over the weekend. The blaze was battled by 30 firefighters from nearby municipalities and the family was treated on the scene by paramedics. Thankfully, their smoke detectors were in good working order and everyone escaped without injury or loss of life. This story, thankfully, had a happy ending. In news from FoxNews.com, some Illinois schools have set up ‘active shooter’ boxes that look like fire alarm pull stations. These manual activation points, widely called panic buttons, can be an extremely effective part of any organization’s emergency response plan. They can be programmed to carry out a number of predetermined emergency response countermeasures, including notifying police to, locking down perimeter doors, and notifying onsite personnel to the emergency. The victim of the break-in was able to confirm that someone had been at her house and had stolen her car. Police took the proper actions and began investigating.
